  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognise when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don't need any formal training to attend the workshop—anyone 16 or older can learn and use the ASIST model. Read more...

*funded & low cost spaces may be available when there are suicide related concerns about a family member, please email deryn@gallierhouse.co.uk for info.

  • safeTALK is a half day (3.5 hour) suicide prevention training course that can help you make a difference. Know what to do if someone’s suicidal by following the easy to remember TALK steps – Tell, Ask, Listen and Keep-safe. These practical steps offer immediate help to someone having thoughts of suicide and helps you both move forward to connect with more specialised support.

The safeTALK course was developed by LivingWorks in Canada and is delivered worldwide. It complements the more comprehensive 2 day ASIST course by conveniently widening the net of suicide alert helpers to ensure that thoughts of suicide aren’t missed, dismissed or avoided. The safeTALK course is based on the principles of maximum dissemination and minimum cost.

The key aims of the workshop are:

    • Helps you to recognise when somebody is having thoughts of suicide.

    • Guides you through the easy to remember TALK steps that are: Tell, Ask, Listen and Keep Safe.

    • Done by combining discussion, video clips and overcoming barriers talking about suicide can create.

    • On asking the important question "Are you feeling suicidal?" the workshop then goes on to show you how you can connect the person in crisis to further support resources.

The intended outcome of the training is:

    • Realising when we are missing, dismissing and avoiding invitations from somebody who is suicidal.

    • Identifying the people who are having thoughts of suicide

    • Confidently being able to handover to the appropriate resources that can provide safe suicide interventions and practical aftercare.

  • Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a two day training course which teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue. The course can be delivered face to face or virtually.

MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist, but it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening.

You’ll learn to recognise warning signs of mental ill health, and develop the skills and confidence to approach and support someone while keeping yourself safe.

You’ll also learn how to empower someone to access the support they might need for recovery or successful management of symptoms. This could include self-help books or websites, accessing therapy services through their GP, their school or place of work, online self-referral, support groups, and more.

What’s more, you’ll gain an understanding of how to support positive wellbeing and tackle stigma in the world around you.

  • Our two day Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses are for everyone who works with, lives with or supports young people aged 8-18 and can be delivered virtually or face to face. They will teach you the skills and confidence to spot the signs of mental health issues in a young person, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need. In doing so, you can speed up a young person’s recovery and stop a mental health issue from getting worse.

Our courses won't teach you to be a therapist, but we will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis - and even potentially stop a crisis from happening.

But more than that, we aim to give you the information and skills to look after your own mental health so that you can set an example for young people. By giving you the tools to have these conversations, we hope to empower you to create a mentally healthy, supportive environment in your family, school, peer group or community.

Let's create a future where mental health is treated as a normal part of life, in the same way as physical health. A future where every young person has access to support if they need it.

  • A one day course teaching the theory and practice of suicide intervention skills for application in any professional or personal setting.
